2024 Stewardship Council Land Protection Grant Awards
The Nashua, Squannacook, and Nissitissit Rivers Wild & Scenic Stewardship Council is pleased to announce that
over $39,000 in grant funding was awarded in 2025 through our Land Protection Grants Program. The
Council awarded full funding for three projects, all of which demonstrate strong commitment towards
protecting the rivers’ resources and building local stewardship of the rivers in accordance with the Nashua,
Squannacook, and Nissitissit Rivers Stewardship Plan.
The grants program supports municipalities, land conservation organizations, and state agencies in protecting
the riverfront and watershed lands. The program furthers local conservation efforts by providing funds to
support acquisition, transaction, due diligence, and management costs associated with land protection.
The following projects received funding:
Town of Brookline Conservation Commission - $13,000 to support the conservation of ~254 acres of land, a purchase of fee interest. The parcels are critical inholdings that will add to the existing ~825 acres of land of Brookline conservation land.
Town of Townsend - $13,000 to survey and mark land along West Meadow Road to secure road frontage, thus safeguarding over 1,600 feet of Locke Brook in Townsend, as well as to survey and mark boundaries of a 25.6 acre parcel of land off of Dudley Road, which borders the Squannacook River.
Town of Westminster - $13,000 to survey the newly acquired Phillps Brook Conservation Area on Ashburnham State Road, and to support maintenance, public access, trail creation, and environmental monitoring at that property.
Grant funding is provided by the Stewardship Council through the National Park Service under CFDA: 15.962 –
National Wild & Scenic Rivers System.
We congratulate the grantees and extend best wishes for the success of their projects.
