As part of its mission to encourage the stewardship of our Wild and Scenic river corridors, the NSN Rivers Wild and Scenic Stewardship Council initiated a project to hold a series of charrettes for conservation landholders along each river. Each charrette was designed to focus on a single river corridor, thus one for the Squannacook, one for the Nissitissit, and one for the Nashua. The half-day charrettes, held in 2023 and 2024, were professionally facilitated. The invitees included federal and state agencies, local and regional land trusts, conservation commissioners, greenway and open space committee members, water district and park managers, and recreational groups.
The purpose of these half-day charrettes was to bring these parties together to:
- Get to know each other and their respective land assets and management concerns;
- Explore areas of potential collaboration/coordination of land stewardship activities and determine if there is sufficient interest to pursue any of these further;
- Learn about resources available through the Wild & Scenic Stewardship Council; and
- Learn about funding resources for stewardship efforts (list of grant resources).
The Charrettes were successful in bringing together organizational representatives for an engaging conversation about stewardship concerns, issues, projects, and goals. Several focus areas were identified as being of interest for future coordinated efforts. The Council will be following up with attendees on the areas that were identified and using the information that was garnered to inform future Council projects.
