2023 Stewardship Council Land Protection Grant Awards
The Nashua, Squannacook, and Nissitissit Rivers Wild & Scenic Stewardship Council is pleased to announce that
over $35,000 in grant funding was awarded in the second year of our Land Protection Grants Program. The
Council awarded full funding for three projects, all of which demonstrate strong commitment towards
protecting the rivers’ resources and building local stewardship of the rivers in accordance with the Nashua,
Squannacook, and Nissitissit Rivers Stewardship Plan.
The grants program supports municipalities, land conservation organizations, and state agencies in protecting
the riverfront and watershed lands. The program furthers local conservation efforts by providing funds to
support acquisition, transaction, due diligence, and management costs associated with land protection.
The following projects received funding:
Harvard Conservation Trust - $19,956 for large-scale invasives plant removal, native plant re-introduction, and
wildlife habitat restoration on 27 acres of conservation land owned by the Harvard Conservation Trust
containing small streams which feed into Bowers Brook, a tributary of the Nashua River.
North County Land Trust - $2,252 to survey and monument land on Northfield Road to protect road frontage
to the Peabody Conservation Area property, which protects over 620 feet of Mulpus Brook in Lunenburg.
Shirley Conservation Commission - $13,000 toward due diligence costs for acquisition and protection of 24.74
acres of land on Burrage Road having significant ecological and recreational value and for protection of town
water supply.
Grant funding is provided by the Stewardship Council through the National Park Service under CFDA: 15.962 –
National Wild & Scenic Rivers System.
We congratulate the grantees and extend best wishes for the success of their projects.
